Minutes of St Andrews Fairtrade Town Campaign 13thFebruary 2019

Matters arising

·   The group working on a JTS coffee morning pack will meet soon.

 

Financial report:  £124.68.  

·   AC to submit receipts for bananas following the 2ndLawhead Primary School visit.

 

Community Council

·   We will now be attending the CC meeting at 7pm on Monday 4thMarch, for a 5-10 minute presentation.  PM had forwarded JC’s article to CC members and will again advise them to read it before the meeting.  Material to hand out includes:  2019 Fairtrade Finders and a single sheet of information based on the text of our Powerpoint    presentation.  PR, AC, JC and MP had met on 2ndFeb to prepare the points we would like to make at the meeting.  This was agreed by the group.  

·   PR reported on the road signs situation.  Colleen Tait (Scottish Fair Trade Forum) is collating reports of the experience of Scottish Fairtrade towns re their road signs.  No other signs have been taken down in Scotland.  There had been no further discussion on the matter yet by the cross-party parliamentary group, following a meeting which was not quorate.

 

Fairtrade Fortnight

·   JC had produced the updated Fairtrade Finder for 2019.  Places and events at which to display/hand them out include:  producer talk (see below), Tourist Information, Town Library, churches, Rectors Café, Byre Theatre, our website, University residences during the summer, University Schools.                                                ACTION ALL

·   Laminated certificates to be prepared for shops, cafes, churches.  PR to print 6-12 of each;  PM/AM to laminate them.                                                     ACTION PR,PM,AM

·   Further details to be checked before final draft of the Finder can be produced on Friday:  PR to contact E Dowie re Hope Park;  PM to contact J Anderson re Community Hub.                                                                               ACTION PR,PM

·   Producer talk. We had been offered a visit by members of a Rwandan coffee cooperative on 4thMarch.  AK to arrange a venue for 5pm and to circulate this information to the rest of the group so that we can all publicise it. ACTION AK,ALL

·   Other events: Cupar Justice and Peace and Castlehill PS P4 Fairtrade Events Group are hosting a cocoa farmer from Ivory Coast at 1.30pm on Thursday 7thMarch.  All invited.

·   Fairtrade bake giveaway on Monday 25th, with Fairtrade cupcake flags.

·   Fairtrade Bake-Off. AK to organise this with support from the Town group, including someone to judge it and perhaps support from AM’s nephew.  Date, time and venue details needed asap for Community Pinboard.                           ACTION AK

·   Publicity.  Two items (letter before and article afterwards) in the Citizen, plus a notice for the Community Pinboard.  The article to include a photo – ideas for this include: Rwandan coffee growers, CC meeting.  AK will be distributing Fairtrade Fortnight posters and table toppers to all residences etc.  

·   Our flag to fly over the Town Hall if practical problems re access are resolved in time.

 

 

Lawhead Primary School

·   AK,MP,MR and AC reported on their first visit on Feb 12thto P7.  They had presented a lesson on Fairtrade focusing on bananas and using Fairtrade Foundation materials for a quiz, video and game as well as a drawing and collage activity.

·   Their next visit is to P3 on Feb 26th.

·   Following the P3 visit, we will write to the class teachers and suggest an annual visit.

·   Re schools:  MP is now in contact with D McClure of Madras College and we hope to have future collaboration over Fairtrade.

 

AOB

·   AH had been contacted by Traidcraft Exchange about their 40thanniversary and a request to mark it with a Big Brew coffee morning.  She will remind us of this later in the year.

·   On 23rdMarch there is a Fair Trade Information and Networking session organised by the Scottish Fair Trade Forum in Perth.  PR to attend and he encouraged others to join him.

·   AC had received this year’s SFTF membership certificate.

·   We discussed the idea of enlarging the scope of our group towards the larger issue of trade justice.  There was agreement on this and a sense that we want to do more campaigning and to look for likeminded groups to work with.  PR to find up to date information about the Trade Justice Movement and circulate it.            ACTION PR
